What are you really eating ?

For me, the decision to not eat meat, after consuming it for the majority of my life wasn't a difficult one, especially once I thought about the implications and the risks. Recent developments with the FDA ruling that genetically modified Salmon could now be released for public consumption in the US, just didn't quite sit right with me. For the record, these new genetically modified salmon eat far less than the ancestors they were derived from and also grow nearly twice as fast. I don't know about you, but something about an organism eating less and somehow growing faster, just doesn't sound right.

The two salmon you see pictured above are both 18 months old. As you can see the genetically modified salmon is significantly larger than the non genetically modified salmon. The GM salmon is 24 inches in length and 6.6lbs in weight, whereas the farm salmon is 13 inches and 2.8lbs. Wait, before you start to do the greedy dance and envision what a fish that grows more than twice it's normal size could do to you if you eat it?

I know the food companies are raving about this new fish because they can charge a higher price point declaring that this is a premium fish, but it is really, and at what cost to the human body ?
I'd like to think of organisms on a simple scale, especially when it comes to what I allow to enter my body. I equate the principle of this particular salmon to weight loss. "When you eat less, you weigh less". The fact that a fish could actually eat less and grow faster seems so contradictory in so many different ways . It goes against basic principles that insure that nature flourishes. I would challenge you to think outside of the box and not necessarily accept everything that you're told. I feel that consuming such a fish could in fact be detrimental to your health . It's troublesome to me on this new frontier of life that many other countries have taken the stance of not allowing genetically modified foods to be so readily available for general consumption. In many cases genetically modified foods are REQUIRED to be labeled in such a way that the consumer wouldn't be manipulated to think that the foods they're consuming are non genetically modified organisms. I think the worst aspect of genetically modified organisms is the pretense that GMO's are being created to make better crops.
In this scenario, I most definitely think one will have to read between the lines. In many cases crops are being manipulated so that they can withstand having more pesticides on them without killing them. I feel if a plant in it's natural state can't withstand additional pesticides, it's probably because you shouldn't be putting additional pesticides on them . I can only imagine what these pesticides that are now being dumped on crops could actually be doing to us internally when we consume them. I cannot help but to think that adding that much pesticide to a plant while it's growing would ensure that there would be residual amounts of pesticide inside the actual plant even after you properly clean it. In a greedy world where higher crop outputs are king, this technicality could easily be overlooked. Many corporations only care about the bottom line, and more often that bottom line doesn't equate to your health, but more means but which big corporations can line their pockets. There are so many studies that directly link pesticides and other harmful chemicals directly to cancer.

This is my challenge to you, to take the initiative on what your consuming and find out more information. This is about well being and self preservation, the only person who can be 100% responsible for that is you. Till next time.
